The Bacon Martini was invented by P Moss in 1985 and first served at the Double Down Saloon in Las Vegas in the early 90’s. Although these days bacon drinks have become somewhat common and others sometimes try to claim credit, it is an established fact that the world’s first bacon drink was the Bacon Martini at Double Down. Its true origin has been documented in Esquire, Playboy, NY Post, Today Show and BBC.
P Moss explains how the idea of the Bacon Martini came to him: “The original idea came to me when high end restaurant bars began infusing fruit with vodka, and I thought it was interesting. But then I thought, what about other things? And the first thing I tried was America’s favorite food: Bacon.”
He also explains how to make both the Bacon Martini and the Bacon Bloody Mary. “The recipe for the Bacon Martini is very simple. Fry 3 strips of bacon until they are crisp. The key here is to use the heartiest hickory smoked bacon you can find. Massage the 3 strips of bacon into a bottle of vodka then let it sit for 48 hours. Pour the bacon infused vodka into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Then strain into a chilled martini glass and serve without garnish. It’s that simple.
As for the Bacon Bloody Mary, use the bacon-infused vodka, then make the Bloody Mary anyway you like and it will be absolutely delicious. People call it breakfast in a glass. The key is simplicity. The result, delicious.”
P Moss’s newest book is called “Liquid Vacation: 77 Refreshing Tropical Drinks from Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas.” This full-color, beautifully photographed book has plenty of delicious cocktail recipes and aloha spirit. Consider it the bible of tropical cocktail and tiki bar recipe books. The creatively-named cocktails include the Bender Ender, Coco Nut, Nakalele Knockout, Polynesian Pile Driver, Stranded in Hana, Wai’anae Wipeout, Thurston Howl, and the Zombie.
