Orange Cranberry Bacon French Toast

Nothing is better than waking up to the smell of a delicious breakfast cooking in the oven. This overnight French toast will fill your home with the scents of cinnamon, orange and bacon. No one will be able to resist getting out of bed when the reward is a hot cup of coffee and a slice of sweet French Toast drizzled in a bacony orange syrup. Prep everything the night before and surprise your loved ones with a sweet treat the following morning. The orange and cranberry give this dish a sophisticated flavor and keep it from getting too sweet. The home-made syrup is an easy and elegant touch and provides an unexpected pop of bacon flavor. Orange Cranberry Bacon French Toast

Prep Time: 8 hours, 30 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 9 hours, 10 minutes
Yield: 8-10 pieces of French toast
Serving Size: About two pieces

Ingredients For the French Toast:
1 loaf french bread
5 eggs
zest of one orange
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup milk
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
8-10 strips cinnamon sugar bacon , cooked
1 cup dried cranberries

Ingredients For the Syrup:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup orange juice
1 Tbsp cornstarch
1/4 cup cinnamon sugar bacon , cooked, finely chopped

For the French Toast:
Slice bread into 1″ slices. Place slices on the bottom of a buttered 9″x13″ baking pan. Set aside.

In a medium sized bowl combine the eggs, orange zest, orange juice and sugar. Beat well. Add milk, cream, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and stir until well-combined. Add in cranberries, stir until berries are well dispersed and coated with egg mixture.

Pour about half the egg mixture over the bread, making sure to soak each piece of bread. Cut bacon strips in half and top each slice of bread with two halves. Pour the rest of the egg mixture over the bread, making sure each piece is completely soaked.

Cover and refrigerate for 6-8 hours (overnight).

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Uncover French toast and bake for 20-30 minutes until bread is crispy and golden.

Serve immediately.

For the Syrup:
Bring water and sugar to a boil.

In a separate bowl, whisk together orange juice and cornstarch. Add to water/sugar mixture.

Reduce heat to a simmer and stir for 8-10 minutes until mixture thickens. Add in bacon and stir for about a minute more. Remove from heat.

Allow syrup to sit overnight so flavors can mingle. Reheat before serving or serve at room temperature.
