The Takedowns is an awesome conceptual food event that has taken the culinary world by storm. Part food festival and part competition, the premise behind the events is simple. Set the theme of the event. Like, bacon. Next, invite home cooks to compete. Supply them with the sponsored ingredient. Each competitor cooks up enough food to feed a hungry, lucky crowd of ticket holders, who pay about $15 to sample dozens of dishes. Attendees vote on their favorites, and the winner takes home a ton of awesome prizes and, most importantly, the sought-after title of Takedown Champion.

The Mastermind behind the Takedowns is Matt Timms, who’s been organizing the Takedowns for 11 years. He wanted to create a food competition with a casual party atmosphere, without any restrictive rules. The Takedowns are in essence a communal celebration of good food and the people who love it. Paying homage to the main ingredient is also key. Matt’s been doing Bacon Takedowns for 6 years. Some of his favorite dishes from past events include Bacon Cheesecake and Sas-Pig-Rilla Gelato.

Lucky New Yorkers were able to attend the “Brooklyn Bacon Takedown” in October, sponsored by Hormel Black Label Bacon. But the event travels all over the country. Here are some of the dishes served at the Brooklyn event. Our fingers are crossed that this awesome event will visit the West Coast soon!
