Oscar Mayer’s Wake Up and Smell the Bacon Alarm App Turns Out to be a Massive Failure
We all want to wake up to the smell of delicious, crispy bacon sizzling in a frying pan of its own juices, and alas, it’s not always meant to be. Some days, we can barely wake up in time to brew ourselves a pot of coffee, but a few years ago, we told you about the Wake’n Bacon, an alarm clock that was set to revolutionize all alarm clocks by automatically cooking a heaping plate of bacon for you ten minutes before the alarm is set to go off, so as soon as you wake up, you’re treating to the smell of your bacon breakfast just wafting around your bedroom.
But unfortunately, this Shark Tank-rejected innovation is still yet to be mass-produced, and even if you did manage to engineer one, what if you happened to run out of bacon? What if the risk of a wooden bacon warmer in your bedroom was just too much for you? Oscar Mayer, pioneer of such strange and beautiful marvels as Say It with Bacon series of gifts and the Institute for the Advancement of Bacon, seemed to have come up with the perfect solution when they announced their alarm app, Wake Up and Smell the Bacon.
It seems like an obvious investment to make for the bacon company. After all, we’re using our smartphones more and more, and the makers of Spin Genie have found that phone and tablet user bases have exceeded desktop and laptop user bases. Travelodge even studied the waking habits of Brits a few years back and they found that 71% claimed that alarm clocks are now obsolete, with everyone using their phones as alarm clocks. To this end, it seems like Oscar Mayer’s gotten it right.
Wake Up and Smell the Bacon is an alarm clock app that plugs into a dongle that releases a delicious bacon scent when the alarm goes off. But for all its promises of letting owners wake up to the smell and sound of sizzling bacon, it turned out to be a flop. There were major problems with the dongle – phones wouldn’t fit on it unless they were removed from their case, and when they did fit, the dongle never released the delicious smell we all crave. It was one disappointment after another – especially considering you had to go through a difficult process to even get a dongle in the first place.
But this could all just be phase one of Oscar Mayer’s quest to bring delicious bacon to all. Feedback from existing owners of the dongle may help them create a better Wake Up and Smell the Bacon set. We won’t know for sure, but it sure seems worth the wait.
