Wendy’s new Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger is all about the bun. Or at least, it’s supposed to be… The new “premium” burger from Wendy’s is one of the first fast-food burgers to be served on an “upscale” bun. But how many people pay that much attention to the bun when eating a burger? And how many people would order a burger based entirely on the quality (or novelty) of the bun?
I was expecting to be blown away by the amazingness of the toasted pretzel bun, but I was a bit underwhelmed. I thought the outer part of the bun would be slightly crisp, but it wasn’t crisp at all. Or soft. The entire bun had a chewy quality that was not unpleasant despite being unexpected.
The thing that raised the burger from mediocrity to an above-average level was the honey Dijon sauce. Honey Dijon pretzels and honey Dijon potato chips are some of my favorite snacks, and the Dijon sauce goes really well with the pretzel bun. If you’re not a fan of honey Dijon, this is not the burger for you.
Also contributing to the deliciousness of the burger was the warm cheddar cheese sauce in addition to the melted slice of cheddar cheese. The bacon was better than average. It was chewy and added good taste and texture like bacon should, but more of it would’ve been better. Especially at a $4.69 price point. The extra tomatoes, red onion and non-iceberg lettuce were a nice touch.
A friend who tagged along on this tasting trip can’t eat dairy, and he was unimpressed with his cheese-less pretzel burger (poor guy, imagine not being able to eat cheese). As I mentioned, if you don’t like honey Dijon, I don’t think you’ll like this. Subbing mayo and ketchup for the honey Dijon sauce just wouldn’t work. The honey Dijon is what makes the pretzel bun work for me. I would order it again, but I wouldn’t go to Wendy’s again for the sole purpose of ordering one. Unless I had a hankering for a Frosty, too… For fast-food burgers, I give it a 6 out of 10.
