Her name is Norita Solt and she proudly, nobly and heroically showed up at the world famous Iowa State Fair with a dream, some pie dough and more bacon cheeseburger innards than you could shake a rolling pin at.
And just like in the movies, when one brave soul stands up for what they believe, even amongst some of the most notoriously “well centered” mid-western traditionalists, victory was grabbed from the crushing, clenching vice of incredulity and bacon once again won out, for liberty and justice … for ALL!
According to all reports from those who were there, including the good people over at the “readMedia” and the Iowa State Fair Food Department, Ms. Norita Solt of Bettendorf, IA was proclaimed the “Overall Winner” in the highly competitive, “Savory Pie” contest at the 2010 Iowa State Fair and her delicious “Bacon-Cheeseburger Pie took the official “Blue Ribbon” prize, Sue Olson of Des Moines, IA earning 2nd place and Joyce Larson of New Market, IA coming in third.
The Iowa State Fair’s “Food Department” is the largest of any state fair in the country. The “Food Department” events took place and were judged over in the recently renovated “Elwell Family Food Center” and were proudly sponsored by Blue Bunny.
As full tilt “Baco-Mania” continues to run rampant throughout the entire country, it’s a moral victory to see something as pure and simple as good ole’ American Bacon-Cheeseburger Pie” win out in a popularity contest when up against all sorts of ridiculous and crazy concoctions and combinations like: cherry, apple, blueberry, lemon meringue, boysenberry and even insane flavor mixtures like chocolate and butterscotch, all mixed up together under the very same pie crust and publicly served, right out in the open what is purported to be a wholesome family event, right in front of a gathered group of clearly under-aged children!
“My… oh my … what is this world coming to?”
