Bacon Today reader Joakim Troëng alerted us of a breaking news story out of Scandanavia today.

An estimated 500 pigs were in an Edenberga, Sweden barn when a possible lightning strike ignited the structure. Approximately 250 pigs died in the blaze and at least 100 more were taken to receive emergency medical attention. A sad day for the bacon-loving world indeed.

This news comes straight out of the Volokonovsky district of the Belgorod Region. (Awww yeah, boiiieeees! Put yo hands up for da Belgorod Region!) In a very poorly written article from MeatRussia.com we get a somewhat confusing but nonetheless interesting story about a brand new pre-bacon farm in Russia’s Southwest region – which is different from the American Southwest in that it has pig farms and no Grand Canyon or Walk of Fame.

This new facility can foster up to 16 thousand piglets at a time! These piglets will eventually be transferred to a fattening house when they reach a weight of 35Kg. The entire complex apparently produces up to 60 thousands tons of pig per year, which leads to a whole lot of bacon.

Russia is doing its part to bring bacon to all the citizens of the world, and for this, we offer everyone in Belgorod a heartfelt “Spasibo”!

– Mr. B

Two pigs were heroically saved from certain death in a small UK town. The hogs were enjoying their pre-bacon days playing in the mud when they wandered too close to their farm’s well.

After falling 10 feet into the hole, farm workers had to call local firefighters to aide in the pigs’ rescue. Using large livestock netting and a little ingenuity, the rescue workers pulled the pigs out of harm’s way. In doing so, the firefighters helped bring some lucky diners one day closer to enjoying some top-quality bacon.

Sure, reports stated that the pigs were pets. Yes, they were called by something other than piggie or hog or “soo wee” — their names were Bramley and Bramble to be exact. So, a greater question remains to be answered by the readers of Bacon Today…

Would you eat bacon that used to have a cute name? Mmmmmm…named bacon…

We tend to celebrate the carnivorous side of bacon here at Bacon Today, but we have to acknowledge the folks out there that would rather look at bacon than eat the tasty meat. Case in point is an unnamed woman in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada that showed up on Dara Hirbod’s doorstep to offer $500 for Dara NOT to eat the pre-bacon (AKA pig) that he had bought for $30 and raised with the intention of creating all manner of tasty pork-related dishes.

Of course, with $500, Dara can buy nearly 14 more pigs, so I’m not sure if the anonymous activist really thought this one through.

By the way, the pig’s name is Bacon.

We salute you, Dara. Go get your bacon on!

As you can see, I drew a pig! Pre-Bacon is all the rage at the draw a pig website.

Here’s the basic idea. You go to the site. You agree not to draw anything racist or offensive. You agree to draw a picture of a pig. You agree to love bacon. (Okay, I added that last one.)

So you agree to all those things and then you click to draw, sketching out the pig of your dreams. The whole time you’re sketching, of course, you’re dreaming of raising a healthy, strong drawing of a pig that will someday become a healthy, strong drawing of bacon.

Every drawing of a pig has a dream.

After you complete your drawing, the author reviews your masterpiece for anything racist or offensive and then posts it to the gallery. Plus, you get to answer a few questions about your pre-bacon sketch in order to learn about your personality. Apparently, the manner in which you drew the little critter helps to define the person you are. Maybe with this personal insight you’ll gain a better understanding about why you love bacon in the first place.

– Mike
