The Food Hound, one of the cool cooking blogs we’ve discovered in recent weeks, covers a lot of interesting territory. Looking for great food photography, recipes and cooking ideas? You’ll get that kind of stuff here.

It may shock you to no end (sarcasm alert!), but we couldn’t help but drool onto our keyboards recently when we spotted this bacon-laced recipe by The Food Hound for a great winter soup. Butternut-jalapeño bisque with bacon crumbles is the type of cold-weather dish that comforts souls on cold winter nights. Or on warmer nights. This is just bisque, and it’s your choice.

But this is also a bisque that’s packed with some sophisticated flavors. Better yet, it doesn’t look tough to make, and everything on the ingredient list is available in most groceries and markets.

That includes the bacon. Yes, the bacon. The Food Hound is careful to note that the crumbled bacon bits aren’t just a cool-looking garnish for the finished soup. The bacon is that final “pop” that pushes the dish over the top. This is a winter soup with a blend of creamy, luxurious texture, deep root-vegetable flavor, and the bonus savory boost of crispy bacon. We like that.

The Food Hound’s recipe is another reason why bacon is so great in the kitchen: It’s a great flavor base when starting a recipe. It’s also good enough to be a standalone side dish. Plus bacon has that mysterious quality that makes it a great final touch to a dish. How many foods can give you all that?

Check it out, fellow baconistas. Try making The Food Hound’s butternut-jalapeño bisque with bacon crumbles. Let us know what you think. We’d love to hear from you!

Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages, friends, countrymen, members of the academy, lend me your ears…

The award for Cutest Appetizer Ever (with or without bacon) goes to…

BLT Bites!!!

How awesome is THAT!?

It’s a breadless BLT that’s bite sized and delicious. It takes the delicious bacon found in a BLT, but turns the usually bland BLT taste on its head by totally juicing up the tomato-to-bread ratio. Each glorious bite is a rush of juice, crunch, salt and flavor.

Made by the folks at Black and Gold Chotchkes Blog (as inspired by an app at their wedding), this looks like the perfect crowd-pleasing, conversation-making, bacon-craving-assailing appetizer treat.

Thanks to Paul W. for bringing this to our attention.

– Mr. B

Back in July we wrote about bacon potato chips. Turns out we weren’t 100% accurate with our story and now need your help to get more details and a hands-on review.

The potato chips are cooked in vegetable oil, some bacon is dropped in the oil, and the three ingredients combine to create a bacony delight. Want to know more? Get a hold of creator Bill on Twitter.

If you’re in the San Francisco and can get a hold of some of these bacon potato chips we want your review! Drop us an email at bacontoday@gmail.com with your review and we’ll definitely post it on Bacon Today.

At Tractor Supply Co. alone I found two gems — the How to Raise Pigs book and what I’m about to share with you now.

Bacon Dog Food.

That’s right, now your pooches can be fed as they should — with bacon. Beef, bacon, and cheese to be exact. Retriever brand dog food comes in a variety of flavors but you know what your pet is really going to love.

Just imagine the look on Rover’s face when he hears the crack of that tin lid. I’m betting he’ll quickly turn down every other food in favor of the taste of sweet, sweet bacon in a baste of beef & cheese. That mouth-watering goodness will become Rover’s main meal for years to come.

Regular price for this K9 delicacy is only 89 cents. Think about that, you can make man’s best friend infinitely happy for under a buck a day. What’s stopping you? Run out to your local Tractor Supply Co. and get your pup what he or she deserves — bacon.

50lbs of Vietnamese Pig Food (Garden Grove, CA)

I have 50lbs of just opened feeds for Vietnamese Pigs. The former owner fed them a dog’s diet and now the piggies won’t eat the pigs’ food. So what am I to do? The pig’s diet consist mainly of vegetables and fruits. This 50lbs feed came out of Midway Feed Store, bought it just a few days ago. Please don’t make me take a pic of it. It’s free, not the pig.

We travel the world in search of great bacon. We search high and low for meals that charge the senses and tease the taste buds with mouth-watering anticipation.

Sometimes, we’re early for a flight and we’re just plain hungry. Such was the case on a recent trip through Indianapolis. We found ourselves about an hour ahead of schedule and plenty ready for a hearty breakfast if one was to be found at the Indianapolis airport (IND).

There was a small coffee shop of the corporate-infused-latte variety and a chain restaurant called Champps. We opted for the chain restaurant as the baristas over at coffee central didn’t look like the proud servers of bacony goodness.

We sat down and ordered our meal. A good old-fashioned American breakfast. Two eggs, two pieces of toast, two strips of bacon, a fruit cup, and fried potatoes. Sounded like just what we needed to kick start the last leg of our journey.

We couldn’t have been more wrong. The eggs were bland, the toast was stale, the fruit not fresh, the potatoes tasteless, and the bacon…awful. We could have put up with the poor taste of all the items on our plate but not the bacon. The poor pork was the consistency of cardboard left out to dry on a hot summer day after being soaked the previous night in a tub of stale bathwater. What had the potential of being salty, tasty meat candy was now more like red garden clay. So sad, so tragic, and no where near the happy breakfast we had hoped would guide us through the rest of our day.

This waste of a meal earns a Smaste™ rating of 2.0. That’s right, two. and the two is for the butter. At least that was good. We ate it with a spoon.

There’s a new 24-hour diner in town and it’s got great food and a quirky name. Corky’s Kitchen & Bakery has a down-home feel. Their menu is packed with American classics like bacon & eggs, plate-sized pancakes and chicken fried steak.

I had the bacon & eggs breakfast plate, which came with hash browns and biscuits and gravy.

The bacon (because really, that’s what we’re here to talk about, isn’t it?) was good. Not fantastic, but good enough to satisfy me through breakfast. It was well cooked – crisp, but not crunchy. Smaste™ rating: 32.846.

Corky’s currently has three locations; Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto and Ladera Ranch.

On Saturday, March 21, 2009, we attended the very first Baconcamp. This un-conference was held in the spirit of Barcamp and was attended by a wide range of bacon lovers from all over the place.

I’m borrowing a bit from Scott Kveton’s recap of the event (and using some of his super cool photos too), so thanks to Scott and all the folks at Bacn.com for that and working hard to put on a great event.

Mike & I sat on the panel of celebrity judges for the food+bacon portion of Baconcamp. Joining us were (listed by Twitter name) @iamcal, @arielwaldman, @micahsaul, Otto Von Danger (founder of BaconFest), and @kveton. Our Twitter name is @bacontoday in case you were wondering. With over 40 bacon-related dishes to sample, it was a long and bacony journey and very difficult to keep sharp on our scoring as we neared bacon coma.

We’ll list all the bacon dishes in a later article. For now, we’ll just list the winners. Quoting from Scott Kveton’s recap:

“The audience was given 3 votes which they could put towards the “Best Overall” and we recognized those with “Grand Prize” and “Runner-up” trophies.

Grand Prize: Maker’s Mark Ice Cream – @mooflyfoof

Runner-up: Chicken-fried Bacon – mp

The judges also had a few prizes they wanted to hand out based on the dishes we all sampled:

Judges Choice: The Bacone – Christian from Wikia

Judges Choice Runner-up: Potato bacon tart

Best presentation: Maple Bacon Lollipop

Most scientific: Bacon Hyper-cube

Most likely to tempt a veggie: Bacon hummus

Best Soup: Bacon Pea Soup – @oznog

Best effort, worst food: Bacon Brownies (hint: don’t mention poop during your preso)”

That ought to whet your bacappetites just enough for now. Check back soon for more updates and our video documenting the event titled “24 Hours of Bacon”.

If you love your pets, it may be time to give them a wonderful treat.

Imagine if every single thing your dog ate smelled like bacon. How happy would your pooch be if all foods had the scent of meat candy? Well now you can give your canine the ultimate gift — ecoPure’s natural appetite enhancer with “natural Bacon & Cheddar aroma”.

Big thanks to Bacon Today reader Kerry for bringing this product to our attention. Kerry says “My dog is a picky eater and I can’t get her to eat her food some days, so I figured making everything taste like bacon would help. So far it seems to be working.”

You can buy ecoPure’s appetite enhancer on their web site for only $5.99 per 2 oz bottle.

Have you treated your pets with the smell/flavor of bacon? Let us know how much your pet loves bacon.
