My trip to Virginia was quite fruitful when it came to bacon. At Tractor Supply Co. alone I found two gems — the How to Raise Pigs book and what I’m about to share with you now.

50lbs of Vietnamese Pig Food (Garden Grove, CA)
I have 50lbs of just opened feeds for Vietnamese Pigs. The former owner fed them a dog’s diet and now the piggies won’t eat the pigs’ food. So what am I to do? The pig’s diet consist mainly of vegetables and fruits. This 50lbs feed came out of Midway Feed Store, bought it just a few days ago. Please don’t make me take a pic of it. It’s free, not the pig.

We travel the world in search of great bacon. We search high and low for meals that charge the senses and tease the taste buds with mouth-watering anticipation.
Sometimes, we’re early for a flight and we’re just plain hungry. Such was the case on a recent trip through Indianapolis. We found ourselves about an hour ahead of schedule and plenty ready for a hearty breakfast if one was to be found at the Indianapolis airport (IND).
There was a small coffee shop of the corporate-infused-latte variety and a chain restaurant called Champps. We opted for the chain restaurant as the baristas over at coffee central didn’t look like the proud servers of bacony goodness.
We sat down and ordered our meal. A good old-fashioned American breakfast. Two eggs, two pieces of toast, two strips of bacon, a fruit cup, and fried potatoes. Sounded like just what we needed to kick start the last leg of our journey.
We couldn’t have been more wrong. The eggs were bland, the toast was stale, the fruit not fresh, the potatoes tasteless, and the bacon…awful. We could have put up with the poor taste of all the items on our plate but not the bacon. The poor pork was the consistency of cardboard left out to dry on a hot summer day after being soaked the previous night in a tub of stale bathwater. What had the potential of being salty, tasty meat candy was now more like red garden clay. So sad, so tragic, and no where near the happy breakfast we had hoped would guide us through the rest of our day.
This waste of a meal earns a Smaste™ rating of 2.0. That’s right, two. and the two is for the butter. At least that was good. We ate it with a spoon.
There’s a new 24-hour diner in town and it’s got great food and a quirky name. Corky’s Kitchen & Bakery has a down-home feel. Their menu is packed with American classics like bacon & eggs, plate-sized pancakes and chicken fried steak.
I had the bacon & eggs breakfast plate, which came with hash browns and biscuits and gravy.
The bacon (because really, that’s what we’re here to talk about, isn’t it?) was good. Not fantastic, but good enough to satisfy me through breakfast. It was well cooked – crisp, but not crunchy. Smaste™ rating: 32.846.

On Saturday, March 21, 2009, we attended the very first Baconcamp. This un-conference was held in the spirit of Barcamp and was attended by a wide range of bacon lovers from all over the place.
I’m borrowing a bit from Scott Kveton’s recap of the event (and using some of his super cool photos too), so thanks to Scott and all the folks at Bacn.com for that and working hard to put on a great event.
Mike & I sat on the panel of celebrity judges for the food+bacon portion of Baconcamp. Joining us were (listed by Twitter name) @iamcal, @arielwaldman, @micahsaul, Otto Von Danger (founder of BaconFest), and @kveton. Our Twitter name is @bacontoday in case you were wondering. With over 40 bacon-related dishes to sample, it was a long and bacony journey and very difficult to keep sharp on our scoring as we neared bacon coma.
We’ll list all the bacon dishes in a later article. For now, we’ll just list the winners. Quoting from Scott Kveton’s recap:
“The audience was given 3 votes which they could put towards the “Best Overall” and we recognized those with “Grand Prize” and “Runner-up” trophies.

The judges also had a few prizes they wanted to hand out based on the dishes we all sampled:
