If you’re in the midwest and the early morning hunger pangs hit you, head on over to Hardees for a quick & affordable bacon fix. It’s the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this small sandwich.
Hardees touts it as:
“Folded egg, slices of crispy bacon and American cheese all on a freshly baked Made from Scratch™ buttermilk biscuit.”
As far as breakfast fast food on the road goes this one really hits the spot. The bacon was above average for a fast food joint, the eggs & cheese were tasty and the biscuit was delicious. Definitely recommended when you’re on the run!
Touted by West Coast fast food restaurant Carl’s Jr. as “Charbroiled 100% Black Angus beef topped with crispy bacon, slices of melted Swiss and American cheese, and mayonnaise served on toasted sourdough bread,” we’re slightly suspicious as to the 6-dollar worthiness of this particular sandwich.
Wendy’s came out with a burger that has 6 patties. 6!
After looking up the stats on this burger I could only find the info on the Baconator Triple, which is HALF the size of the 6 patty (duh!), so I’ve doubled everything I found to get a better idea of what is in this 6 burger death wish:
2660 calories
172 grams of fat
690 mg of cholesterol
180 grams of protein (okay, that’s not bad… just triple what any human being needs)
94 grams of carbs
The Baconator Triple has 9 strips of bacon… does the 6 patty have 18?? (Swoon?)
Sweet Hamhocks. I can feel my stroke forming in my left lobe. And check out this guy, he actually ATE the whole thing and didn’t die (immediately):
This guy either is A) a new breed of human being or B) a complete and utter idiot.
I really thought around 2:04 that he was going to throw up. Or quit. Or fall over dead. But either way, kudos for Wendy’s for going that extra mile and keeping us meat lovers flush in bacon! (Although, we may send you our medical bill. Just saying…)
According to the box, I was in for a DERlicious meal. I was about to embark upon my first ever meal at the hot dog chain restaurant Wienerschnitzel. Yes folks, I have lived in California for 25 years and never once set foot in the west coast home of Germanic wienosity. (I’ll pause for your collective gasp)
Once I arrived at the red & yellow palace of stuffed franks my eyes spotted something I knew I had to try — the all beef barbecue bacon hot dog. Adding some fries and a soda was a natural fit so for just under $7.00 I was on my way to a beefy, bacony bonanza.
The dog arrived in a well-designed box and upon opening the lid I was impressed by the meal’s appearance. The hot dog was covered in BBQ sauce, shredded cheese and a thick slice of bacon. As is customary when tasting any bacony meal, a piece of bacon was torn off and tasted without the influence of the rest of the food. The Wienerschnitzel bacon was quite tasty and would have been good as a meal in itself.
After testing the quality of bacon it was on to the full hot dog concoction. From first bite to last the mix of beef dog, cheese, BBQ and bacon were a solid combination that really filled up this tester. I’d recommend this meal to anyone looking for a quick bacon fix on the west coast of the United States.
On a recent trip to Toronto, I got a craving for some good old-fashioned, non-Canadian bacon. I ran into a Tim Horton’s fast food restaurant not quite knowing what to expect and ordered a Breakfast Sandwich with bacon. What I got was a great meal featuring crispy, savory bacon in a compact package.
The quality of the bacon was excellent. The placement on the sandwich was my only gripe, but the tastiness more than made up for the poor presentation. Heck, not everyone is going to pop the top off the sandwich for a photograph. By the way, the eggs were great as well. So much better than what you get from another popular fast Mc-food place featuring baconless breakfast sandwiches.
I just wish they had Tim Horton’s restaurants on the west coast of the United States. Oh well, gives me a good excuse for another bacon-filled trip.
We decided to give Burger King another shot. After the bacon fail at Burger King a few months back we took a break from the capital of “Have it Your Way”. Some buddies wanted to make a fast food run and we wound up at Burger King where I spied the BK Stacker on the glossy overhead menu. It looked so tasty & juicy I had to give it a try.
The burger arrived in a specifically-labeled wrapper. Nice touch BK! On the wrapper it reads:
You might be looking at this BK Stacker saying, “It’s piled so high with meat, cheese and bacon, I want to climb it.” Don’t. Just eat it.
While kind of humorous, once we opened the wrapper we quickly learned that this was a bit of an overstatement.
The pile was not nearly high enough to warrant any oohs or aahs, let alone make us want to climb it. There was enough bacon peeking out of the sandwich to make us want to continue though, so continue we did.
If you’ve been reading Bacon Today for a while, you know that the proper way to test any bacon-enriched food is first — before anything else — to tear off a piece of plain, unbridled bacon and test the quality of the porcine ingredient. We did just that with the BK Stacker burger and give the Burger King bacon a “fair to middlin” (that’s mediocre for you folks not from the mid-west portion of the United States).
From a presentation standpoint, the burger lacked any “food sexy” for sure. From a tastiness standpoint, well we give this burger a Smaste™ rating of 26.687. Good for a quick bacon jolt when you need it, but not recommended for a true bacon connoisseur.
EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION:
Why is it that the non-Whopper burgers taste so much different than the genuine Whoppers at Burger King anyhow? Any former Burger King patty slingers out there that can shed some light on this phenomenon?
Another lunch excursion, another bacon-enriched meal for our buddy Scott. This time it was the fast food chain Jack In The Box serving up breakfast for lunch in the form of their Hearty Breakfast Bowl.
While we couldn’t get an official Smaste™ rating, Scott did say the bowl was excellent, the bacon was good and he’d order the item again. Keep in mind this is the guy who ate an entire can of Spam in one sitting, so his scale of good vs. bad may be a bit off kilter.
On a recent trip to Phoenix I found myself wandering away from University of Phoenix Stadium on foot in search of some dinner. The trade show I was attending had just ended and I was in need of food fast. I was so hungry I didn’t care what was on the menu, as long as the food came quickly and was located somewhere between the stadium and my hotel.
Soon enough I was standing in a moderately sized shopping center with dining choices galore. My choice was easy though, I spied a Johnny Rockets hamburger joint and walked in the door.
I had never tried bacon at a Johnny Rockets so my meal was easy to order — a Bacon Cheddar Single Burger (hold the tomato please). When the burger arrived the bacon was jutting out from all sides under the buns. From looks alone I knew this was a good choice, then I got a whiff of the bacony scent and prepared to enjoy.
This burger earns a Smaste™ rating of 37.394. The high quality bacon outshines a fairly average burger, but it’s something I’d definitely order again.
We first saw the burger on the LCD monitor while filling up at a Shell gas station. Those classic Carls Jr. ads that give mouth-watering a whole new meaning. The burger looked good and we knew we had to try one.
Then, the bacon ideas started flooding in email by email. Our amazing readers continously send in their great bacon finds to bacontoday@gmail.com and the Six Dollar Bacon Burger got buried in a long publication schedule.
Well, Carls Jr. decided to sweeten the deal and send us a couple free coupons to try the Guacamole 6 Dollar Bacon Cheeseburger so we had no more excuses. Mike was busy that night so I called up my good buddy Kevin to help me with the taste test.
Once we ordered our burgers and took our seats we immediately tore off pieces of bacon to give them the Bacon Today standard, unadulterated bacon taste test. Surprisingly, the bacon was quite tasty for fast food fare.
Then it was time to get to business.
We opened the boxes.
Removed the burgers.
And chowed down. Admittedly, I’m not a huge guacamole fan but these burgers were pretty darn good. There was a good deal of spiciness to the burgers which I really loved. Kevin thought it was a bit too spice for his taste.
The Smaste™ rating for these burgers is a decent 29.578. I think there’s room for improvement but definitely a good meal for a fast food bacon fix.
