Even though we here at Bacon Today love bacon with all our hearts, we understand that in certain circumstances tasty bacon might not be appreciated.
In a new book called “Hunger for Freedom – The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela“, author Anna Trapido connects food to political and non-political events alike. This book provides an interesting perspective on some of the food-based influences of the famous world figures.
And sometimes, these influences and incidents provide good reasons not to eat bacon. Case in point is Winnie Mandela‘s experience with the establishment in South Africa:
“Winnie remembered how the police would eat bacon sandwiches while interrogating her. To this day she cannot eat bacon. “Smell and taste happen in a very unmediated part of your brain … Taste activates a primal part of your brain, which is why very intense emotions can be unburied through food and taste, and things that w ere forgotten remembered.”
We here at Bacon Today salute Winnie Mandela’s decision not to eat bacon. ‘Nuff said.
