Quite possibly the best invention since whatever came before sliced bread, the Wake’n Bacon alarm clock is a work of pure genius. The shape of the device is modeled after pre-bacon and the concept is so simple I can’t believe it’s not already in mass production. You simply place a piece of frozen bacon in the alarm clock when you go to sleep and set the clock. 10 minutes before you’re wake-up time the clock starts cooking your bacon and you are awakened to the smell of bacony goodness. What could get the day started off any better? Well, maybe the aroma of Applewood Smoked Bacon…but I digress.

We’re definitely not the first to report on the bacon alarm clock, and will certainly not be the last. It’s already been featured on such sites as: Wired, American Public Media’s “Splendid Table”, Engadget, Ubergizmo, Gear Live, Design Boom, and many more.

Just in time for the winter season comes a recipe that is sure to bring bacon lovers some warm holiday cheer. Turbaconducken. That’s right — a chicken stuffed in duck stuffed in a turkey, all wrapped in bacon. Otherwise known as a bacon-wrapped turducken. Just how did we create this meaty madness? Read on.

It all started with a dream…and a whole bunch of bacon. Five pounds of bacon to be exact. For some variety we used three types of bacon, including Rocco’s Country Peppered Bacon for the decorative topping.

We used a 15 pound turkey, a small duck, and a pre-cut whole chicken. We consulted the internet for a turducken recipe and hoped for the best.

We started by wrapping the chicken pieces in bacon.

Then we split the duck into two halves…

…and wrapped the duck halves in bacon.

At this point the chicken and duck started looking pretty big, so we test fit the pieces into the turkey. There wasn’t any room to spare but we managed to get all the pieces in there.

Then we wrapped the turkey in bacon and the feast was ready for the oven.

We cooked the birds in a roaster oven on low heat. Cooking took all day but the results were worth the wait.

The cooked concoction looked mouth-wateringly good after pulling it out of the oven.

Some of the bacon shifted during cooking, but overall the bacon held together quite well after an entire day in the oven.

The final product was moist and absolutely delicious. We used no seasoning whatsoever. The bacon gave the poultry just the right hint of salty goodness. The perfect holiday meal for bacon lovers everywhere!

Smaste™ rating: 45.953

The people of Canada sure love their bacon. In a recent survey conducted by Maple Leaf Foods, 43% of the respondents said they would rather have bacon than sex. Are you surprised? If you’re a daily reader of Bacon Today the answer is probably no. In fact, you’re probably asking a question of your own — Canadian or Traditional bacon? Sadly, the survey was not that specific.

Some other interesting findings in the survey:

Move over High Karate…23% of men ranked bacon as their number one favorite fragrance

Four out of five respondents (82%) who said they love bacon also said they are good lovers

Nearly one in four of respondents (23%) wondered if ‘my partner loves bacon more than me’

Well, let me start off by saying WOW — that’s a mighty fine coffee!

I had some family in town so I thought what a better way to taste test a maple bacon coffee flavor then on a bunch of folks too polite to say no. I brewed up the first batch of Maple Bacon Morning™ and just as the coffee maker started to drip I heard the first “What is that? It smells like…maple syrup!” comment. The news trickled throughout the rooms of the house as quickly as the maple smell reached the noses of the family members. Their interest was peaked and a line was forming around the coffee pot.

This particular brew of coffee is on the light side, which matches up perfectly with the hint of maple syrup taste. While there is not actual bacon flavor noticeable, this coffee does make a perfect compliment for a bacon-enriched breakfast as my family & I certainly proved on the morning of my little experiment.

We had pancakes, eggs, and thick-cut bacon with a side of toast and with the addition of Maple Bacon Morning™ coffee, no one left the table disappointed. In fact, they asked where they could get a bag for themselves.

A recent trip to Superior, WI provided an unexpected bacon experience. We stopped at Vintage Italian Pizza (VIP), which is connected to the Capri bar and grabbed a bacon & pineapple pizza.

The pie arrived not long after we ordered and was steaming hot. Complimented by a pitcher of tasty beer the pizza really hit the spot. If you’re ever in the Superior, WI area and have a bacon craving, swing by VIP & the Capri to get your fix.

On a side note, my buddy Matt debuted his latest concoction – the BeerMosa. Similar to the traditional champagne/orange juice Mimosa found on so many a Sunday brunch, this drink is simple…beer & OJ. Give it a shot. Matt promises it’s excellent.

What could be better than going on a motorcycle with over 100 other bikers? Ending the ride with a bacon-wrapped hot dog fresh off the grill.

What started out as a motorcycle ride from Cook’s Corner in Trabuco Canyon to Original Mike’s restaurant in Santa Ana, CA, the Spring Break Toy Ride turned into both a charitable cause for kids and a great place to get some tasty bacon.

I pulled into the parking lot of Original Mike’s and sat down with some friends to enjoy lunch and refreshments. I spied the outdoor grill with what I thought were simple hamburgers for $5.00 a piece and my jaw dropped to the floor when for the same price they offered me a bacon-wrapped hot dog with all the fixings.

Of course I went with option B, got a bacon-wrapped hot dog and loaded it up. The dog was absolutely delicious. Thick, perfectly-cooked bacon and an all-beef hot dog. The combo couldn’t have been better.

All in all this was a great way to spend a Sunday and a worthy cause for charity.

Traveling for business often means scrambling for bacon wherever you can get some. In our travels we’ve tried the bacon various fast food restaurants: Wienerschnitzel, Tim Horton’s, Burger King, Hardee’s and Sonic to name just a few.

One place that really impressed us with their fast-food bacon was Sonic. We enjoyed their bacon so much in fact we built a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich with 30 slices of bacon. Unfortunately, the next bacon we got from Sonic was not so splendid.

Here’s how the morning went down when I got my Sonic breakfast. I ordered the CroisSONIC™ Breakfast Sandwich, but the particular Sonic I want to was out of croissants. So I opted for the BREAKFAST TOASTER® with bacon instead. Take a look at the photos above. The bread was torn and rather soggy and upon opening the sandwich only a few torn, beat-up looking specks of bacon were present. Those tiny pieces of bacon were overcooked and not very tasty either.

In fact, I even ordered a side of bacon and the guy behind the microphone said “uh, I don’t see a place to order a side of bacon here so uh, I’ll just give you some extra bacon.” I never received that extra bacon and boy did my sandwich need some bacon help.

I’ll give Sonic the benefit of the doubt and try their bacon again but this bacon lover, while not quite scorned, hath shed a single salty tear.

Stopped by Starbucks the other day for a quick meeting. Since they had hot food and I was hungry I decided to give their bacon a try. I’ll be honest, I didn’t have much hope for bacon at a coffee shop.

The sandwich (referred to as an “Artisan Bacon” by the barista) was decent. That’s about all I can say about about it. The bacon was quite weak, the gouda cheese was minimal and the eggs were bland. The saving grace for this one is the artisan roll. The bread was quite good and saved the sandwich from being a real stinker.

If you’re in need of a shot of bacon to go with your espresso, I’d say hold off until you get somewhere that carries a better brand of the good stuff.
